Having read and listened to countless self-development books over the years, I have complied a list of books that truly changed my life. The top 5 books that helped me overcome low self-esteem, accept myself fully and take responsibility for my life are reviewed below. Reading these books and actually implementing the suggested steps really did make a difference in how I perceive myself.
1. I Am Enough: Mark Your Mirror And Change Your Life by Marisa Peer
This book is designed to help you like yourself, feel good about yourself and believe in yourself. It’s a quick read with very practical methods to help you overcome unhealthy behavioural patterns. Marisa explains how our language, internal chatter and thought patterns affect our lives. Our mental habits can be detrimental or beneficial to our success. Marisa suggests that you become your own cheerleader- “The most effective way to boost self-esteem is to praise yourself.” The simple, practical methods suggested in this book really are life changing. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is struggling to feel good about themselves or believe in themselves.
2. The Gifts of Imperfection by Brené Brown
If you are a perfectionist, worried about what other people think of you, disconnected or unhappy, then this book is for you. Brené’s honest storytelling explains how she lived with guilt and shame for years, struggling to accept herself as she was. It outlines 10 guideposts on the power of wholehearted living and being true to yourself. This book will change your mindset from “What will people think?” to “I am enough.” You will learn how to establish and live an honest, authentic, imperfect life. The author’s approach to letting go will help you boost your self-esteem and embrace your imperfections.
3. A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle
A New Earth teaches you that acceptance of the present moment leads to happiness and enjoyment in life. By detaching ourselves from our ego and taking responsibility for our own state of mind, we can find enjoyment in the present. The author encourages you not to carry thoughts, feelings and hurt with you longer than you have to. By looking into our minds and detaching ourselves from our ego we let go of limiting stories and allow for personal growth. This book is not the easiest read, I preferred the audiobook, but it’s one of the most life changing books I’ve ever read.
4. Mindful Relationships by Oli Doyle
This book provides a practical six-week guide to building meaningful relationships by living in the present moment. You will learn how to use mindfulness to communicate effectively and become more compassionate with yourself and others. The author gives advice on how you can accept people exactly as they are and relate to people in a different way. This is a lovely book that will help you create a genuine connection with yourself and change your perception of others. I have read this book numerous times and I highly recommend it.
5. Atomic Habits by James Clear
Atomic Habits explains how everyday routines and habits compound to affect our lives over time. The author provides a guide to break bad habits and adopt positive habits in four steps. The steps are simple to understand and will help you implement positive habits to improve your life. This book helped me decide the type of person I want to be. By developing new habits I began to prove my identity to myself and boost my self-esteem.
